Chapter Eight

Once they finished the pizza, Lorelei carried the plates back into the kitchen. No sooner had she deposited them in the sink than Alyssa shouted, “Your phone is ringing!”

“Coming,” Lorelei replied. She hurried into the other room and grabbed it off the coffee table. The number was unrecognized, but it was a local area code so she answered. “Hello?”

“Thank goodness,” a too familiar voice said. “I was worried it was going to go to voicemail.”

“Marigold?” Lorelei asked. “What’s going on? Are you all right?”

“Well, I've been arrested, so not really,” her neighbor said. Lorelei blinked and carried the call into the other room.

“Arrested?” she hissed. “What did you do?”

“Nothing,” Marigold exclaimed, sounding offended. “Well, I guess I haven't technically been arrested since they haven’t charged me with anything yet, but they are holding me for twenty-four hours, and they let me have one phone call.”

“And you chose to call me?”

“You’re always involved with this sort of thing, don’t think I haven’t noticed. Besides, you’re close to my house. You'll help me, won’t you?”

“That depends. What do you need me to do?”

“I need you to help me convince them I'm innocent.”

“What do they think you did?” Lorelei asked, even though she had a sneaking suspicion. Marigold confirmed it with her next words.

“They think I killed him, Lorelei,” Marigold said, sounding more irritated than anything. “Will you please help me? I need the contact information for the people who can provide me with an alibi.”

“I don’t know how you expect me to get that,” Lorelei said, leaning against the counter. She glanced out the window and spotted a familiar truck parked in front of the Aldens’ house. She watched as the man from the other day, Bob, got out of truck and started walking across the yard toward Bethany’s house.

“My appointment book is in my house. It’s in the kitchen, next to the coffee machine. It will have my schedule for yesterday written inside of it, along with the phone numbers for the places I went. Some of it is confidential, so I would appreciate discretion. Try to keep yourself from snooping too much.”

“You don’t have the numbers saved in your phone?”

“I prefer keeping a notebook with my contacts in it,” Marigold said, sniffing. “My key is under the doormat. Will you do this for me? I promise I won’t complain at all if you keep your Christmas lights up too long next year.”

“Fine,” Lorelei said reluctantly. “I’ll call you back soon. Should I call this number?”

“Yes. But wait until it’s dark out. I don’t want the neighbors to wonder what’s going on. Thank you, Lorelei. I owe you for this.”

“I'll call in a few hours.”

She couldn’t think of anything else to say, so she said goodbye and ended the call. Maybe it wasn’t the politest thing to do, but she really didn’t want to go poking around Marigold’s house looking for her address book. She didn’t want to be drawn into all of this more than she already was, and she couldn't shake her own suspicions about Marigold's guilt.
